IQ Testing

The word IQ stands for the measurement of Intelligence Quotient, and gives a measure of intelligence on different aspects of functioning. IQ measures can give information about predicted educational achievement, special needs, or expected level of intellectual functioning prior to the injury or disease.

Why get tested? IQ testing is usually done using a battery of tests which help estimate not only the overall IQ but also give insight into strengths and weaknesses in intellectual functioning. Modern comprehensive IQ tests therefore do not give only one score, but a range of scores which give information on a variety of factors associated with intelligence and intellectual functioning. Using these tests it is possible to identify which aspects of a child's or adult's intellectual functioning is particularly strong and which aspects could benefit from further help and stimulation to maximize individual potential.

It has been reported by the American Psychological Association that children who perform better on IQ tests tend to take in more of what is being taught in the class room. Achieving good grades in school depends on many factors including parent stimulation, persistence, interest in school, social support and interest in achieving academically.

When to take an IQ test? IQ testing can be useful at all ages to gain insight into individual strengths and weaknesses. However, IQ testing can be of particular help when a child or adult is not performing to the expected level and it is unclear what is causing the "mental blockage". In these situations IQ testing will be helpful in identifying the mental strengths and weaknesses, to relate the findings to work or school functioning and identify where further strategies or stimulation may be beneficial.

Gifted Ability is another area where IQ testing can be helpful. Specifically when parents or teachers feel that a child is particularly gifted and need evidence for this or need clarification on which areas of functioning are of particular strength and which areas could benefit from further strategies or stimulation.
